MIGRATION STORIES

Bokja presents new Migration collection Rossana Orlandi, for Design Week, Milan, 2013

Milan Invitation

We will be showing a new range entitled Migration Stories at Rossana Orlandi in Milan during Design Week 9 – 14 April 2013.

Li Edelkoort says of Bokja’s Migration collection: “The Migration Sofa is a masterpiece in Bokja’s work, giving context to contemporary decorative arts”

The Migration Stories references stories of movement and change which come from all over the world.  Reflecting the impact of war, taxes, instability, the economy or even love, the Bokja team has created a collection which captures the very fundamental human experience of bundling up belongings, packing away treasure and moving on.

The Migration Stories reflects the hopes and fears of all people, especially the young, who make the brave decision to create a home of their own far from their family or the place where they were born.  This intriguing show brings together an emotive assemblage of textural exhibits, memorabilia and objects which conjure a sense of change, loss and resolution.

The Migration sofa (below) has been specially created for the Milan show. It is much more than a piece of furniture. Look closely and you can see that it embodies the concept of migration and travel. The sofa appears to carry a burden of rolled up rugs and bedding on its ‘back’ and the drawer at the base evokes a suitcase full of clothes. The ‘wings’ on each side are flexible and can flap in and out, like a bird on the wing or the rudder of a  plane or ship!

The idea of shifting boundaries will be clear to see in the accompanying Migration wallpaper and rugs each bearing the motif of the birds which make an annual migration from one part of the world to another. The collection, revealed for the first time during Design Week at Rossana Orlandi in Milan, 9-14 April, will show a variety of individually crafted pieces of furniture within an immersive environment conjuring the spiritual and practical aspects of human migration.

“AND THEN THERE WERE NONE”

Image

Bokja presents “AND THEN THERE WERE NONE” at CUADRO Gallery as part of ART DUBAI starting Monday the 18th till the 7th of May.

“And Then There Were None”is an installation of tactile spheres, each representing a leader from history. Injecting a twist of dark humor, Bokja presents the installation in parallel with the popular nursery rhyme, Ten Little Indians.

Bokja warns of the timeless phenomena of dictatorship and playfully questions a day when there will be none.

Image

TEN LITTLE DICTATORS, by Bokja.

Ten little dictators all walking a fine line,

One lost his balance and then there were nine.

Nine little dictators ignoring their fate,

One met his early, and then there were eight.

Eight little dictators dreaming of heaven,

One said he’d stay there and then there were seven.

Seven little dictators knocking down bricks,

One got crushed and then there were six.

Six little dictators allowing no one to survive,

One turned against another and then there were five.

Five little dictators all rotten to the core,

One bit the other and then there were four.

Four little dictators who couldn’t agree

One lost his temper and then there were three.

Three little dictators who bit off more than they could chew,

One got swallowed up whole and then there were two.

Two little dictators fighting over a gun,

The inevitable happened and then there was one.

One dictator left, with no where to run,

His actions caught up with him and then there were none.

Our apologies to Septimus Winner for the misuse and abuse of his original song “Ten Little Injuns”, written in1868.

Bokja, design and craft studio, captures the spirit of Sufism at Design Days Dubai

In collaboration with designer Wyssem Nochi, Bokja has created an exhibition entitled: The Seven Stages of the Heart. This collection is rooted in sufi teaching and, through the creative application of fabrics to seven of Nochi’s iconic iron chairs, the installation illustrates the journey from the material to the spiritual.

The collection starts with a chair made entirely of “plastic noise”, fake flowers, cutlery and keyboards

The second stage is represented by layers of Suzani textiles and needlepoint images of earthy connections: a bowl of fruit and home

The core of the fifth chair features an embroidered Burj Khalifa on top of an Ottoman prince’s coat. The fine, gold thread of the embroidery shines with vanity but the remainder of the chair is exposed, revealing the iron structure of Nochi’s design

“The lines of the hexagon in Wyssem Nochi’s chair form a natural pyramid,” Huda & Maria said. “His design was pure and minimal and offered the perfect foundation to build our collection. Each upholstered chair represents a stage in the journey of life – to shed oneself of all material possessions and earthly desires.”

They add, “When thinking about the impact of recent events in our region of the world, we found ourselves looking inwards, trying to make sense of things. Intuitively we were drawn to the words and teachings of sufism to help us understand, spiritually, what has been happening.”

The collection will be on show at the Contemporary Art Platform (CAP) stand at the purpose-built Design Days Dubai exhibition space, The Centre of Now, in central Dubai, close to the spectacular Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
